9.3.10 - ROCKWALL: Rockwall-Heath wide receiver Amaris Fields doesn't have an answer for why he did what he did on Heath's final kick return of the game.
"I just ... I don't know," Fields said. "I just wanted to win."
Fields fielded a squib kick with 33 seconds remaining, and instead of running, kneeling, or falling down, he turned and pitched the ball to his teammate, Parker Wood.
Wood's 48-yard run set up the final three-play drive in the dying seconds of Heath's 40-36 win over Frisco Wakeland at Wilkerson-Sanders Memorial Stadium. The drive was capped by a 12-yard fade to Fields from Ross Hudson for a touchdown.
"Sometimes, kids are playmakers," Heath coach Mickey Moss said. "Amaris Fields, you don't have any other words for it. The kid's a playmaker."
Fields' pitch on the kickoff was totally impromptu. After Frisco Wakeland rallied to take the lead in the final minute – Tyler Kirkindoll hitting Dan Harrington for his second touchdown catch of the game on a 29-yard fly route to take a 36-33 lead – Heath appeared to be out of answers. But Wakeland chose to squib kick, more than likely a response to giving up an 85-yard kickoff return by Heath's Tyler McLoughlin in the first half.
Fields grabbed the ball on the 30-yard line after a few aborted attempts, and then ... pure inspiration.
"Wow," Moss said. "Wow. What do you do with 33 seconds left? I mean, that's a headsy play."
Hudson was 13-for-19 for 126 yards and a touchdown passing with eight rushes for 147 yards and a touchdown.
Kirkindoll was 23-for-36 for 365 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions for Wakeland.
