Wakeland Golf Newsletter - September issue: Click here

4.21.09 - The Wakeland Girls Golf Team competed in their regional tournament Monday and Tuesday. After day one, Wakeland had a 6 point lead over Highland Park, led by Taylor Newlin (74) and Alexis Thompson (82). They had an impressive day one team score of 331, which was their best team score to date. Excited and under pressure to return to state a fourth year in a row, the Lady Wolverines shot another best round team score day two of 325, which was not enough to keep hold of first place. Highland Park had a season low score and took the regional title by two strokes overall. The team's score was comprised of: Taylor Newlin (75), Alexis Thompson (80), Sandrine Nestenius (85), Hannah Soto (85), and Megan Pasteryk (86). Taylor Newlin tied with Patricia Holt for first place, which ended in a five hole playoff between the two players. After five pars in a row in the playoff, Taylor took the Regional Championship. We are proud to have shot the two best score of the year and have clutched the individual title, and the team will be going to the state tournament at Jimmy Clay Golf Course in Austin on May 10 and 11.

9.30.09 - September- Set the Bar High The Stonebridge Ranch tournament was both exciting and nerve-wracking for the Varsity boys. It was their first tournament as a new team at a difficult course for 36-holes. They went in with a positive attitude, coaching each other on some “local” tips.
The challenge of the course The Dye course is well known for its challenging rough and workable greens. While the boys found themselves in some tough situations, each celebrated triumph each time they found the green in regulation. Jack held on to par through most of the first 18 holes, unable to get a chance for birdie. Harrison had two birdies in a row to finish his first round. With several parents and coaches in attendance, the boys came in after 18 holes proud of their second place rank and hoped to go back to take the lead.
At the turn...and going back for 18 more After 18 holes, Coach Wohlers gave each golfer a sandwich and water and sent them out for 18 more. The next round was defiantly a test of endurance and hydration. While many golfers were getting fatigued and showed it in their scores, most of the Wakeland team held on to their scores and even improved.
Finishing as a team and highlights of scores

The team posted a score of 643, finishing third overall and second out of the 4A teams in attendance.
Jack led the team with 75/69
Harrison had a first round of 78
Austin was consistent with 82/81

The JV boys completed their first tournament of the fall season at the Lakes course at Indian Creek Golf club in Carrollton. Unfortunately the recent deluge of rains had an affect on the tournament as it was shortened to a nine hole event due to course conditions. It was a learning experience for the entire team, and now that the boys have gotten their first tournament out of the way, we should expect more top finishes in the tournaments ahead.
The team of Davey Hirschfeld, Conner Reznicek, Kyle De More, Kevin Kucholtz, and Logan Huffman took fourth in the event missing third place by one stroke. In individual honors, Davey took fourth overall with his nine hole score of 45, and Kevin finished in 8th place with a score of 47.
