Swimming 2.16.10: Despite changes due to the weather, the Wolverine Swimmers and Divers really stepped up and showed how resilient they are at the Region 3-4A Championship Meet this past weekend. The girls finished higher than they did last year, got all relays back to the finals, and Alex Huff qualified for State in the 100 Free and the 100 Back. The boys were on fire. They took care of business in prelims that morning and came back for finals in the afternoon with a desire to win. And win they did. The boys brought home the Regional Championship, beating the closest team (Highland Park) by 77 points. State Qualifiers include all three boys relays (a first in Wakeland history), Devin Compan in the 100 free and 100 back, Jesse Kubanet in the 100 fly, and Liam Garrott in the 200 IM (also the most individuals to qualify in Wakeland history). Members of the relay teams include: Devin Compan, Ian Sim, Jesse Kubanet, Tanner Sanders, Kenneth Hall, Liam Garrott, and Zach Kline.
Swimming 1/11/10: Since returning from Christmas, the Wolverines have competed in a dual meet against Richardson Pearce. Even though competing immediately after the holidays can be tough, the Wakeland Swimmers and Divers had a good meet. The boys defeated Pearce 64-33, remaining undefeated in dual meets this year. The girls also won with a score of 58-35. They have one last regular season meet on January 15th before they head into the Championship meet season.
Swimming 11/09:
The Richardson Halloween Relay Meet proved to be a success for both the boys and the girls. The boys placed 1st overall and the girls placed 3rd – out of about 20 teams from around the metroplex.
In their dual v. Frisco High School and The Colony, Wakeland had several outstanding performances as we went head-to-head with our friends and competitors from across town. In the end, Wakeland’s boys defeated Frisco High 61-39 and The Colony 75-27. The girls fought hard and had several excellent races, but fell to Frisco High and was barely beat out by The Colony 49-48.
This past weekend was yet another success for the Wakeland swimmers and divers. We traveled to Lewisville to the Hebron Invitational. Again competing against over 20 teams, the boys brought home a 1st place finish and the girls a 2nd place finish. The girls 200 medley relay school record was broken by Alex Huff, Cambria Pena, Mariah Patterson, and Rishawna Crane. Devin Compan broke his own school record in the 200 Free and Bryan Cindell topped the diving record with a score of 329.90. I am extremely proud of the way they are working and competing. We are about half-way through our season and with everyone continuing to drop time and improve overall, they are shaping up to have an incredible last half of the season as well.
Swimming 10/30: Swim teams square off in triangular meets
Four of the five Frisco ISD swim teams were in action Tuesday in two different triangular meets. The Frisco ISD Natatorium hosted the first between Frisco, Wakeland and The Colony, while Liberty, Heritage and Sherman went head-to-head at Austin College. With only three schools in each meet, there were plenty of first-place performances by FISD swimmers. The pair of tri-meets followed Saturday’s Halloween Relays hosted by Richardson Pearce in which the Wakeland boys claimed the top overall spot in their division by beating runner-up Garland by 112 points. Liberty placed ninth. On the girls side, the Lady Wolverines placed third behind Richardson and Ursuline, and the Lady Redhawks came in at seventh. All FISD teams will participate in Saturday’s Gary Burns Fun Run before returning to the pool Nov. 6.

Swimming 10/12: The last two swim meets have gone very well for the WHS Swimmers and Divers. In our dual meet v. McKinney North and Liberty, both the boys and the girls came up with a first place finish. The Southlake Carroll "Dragon Hunt" was also a success. We were competing against mostly 5A teams. The boys showed that they could hang with the big boys and finished 4th overall. The girls did a great job as well. Both the boys and the girls had best times from several people. They are continuing to improve in leaps and bounds as the season continues.
Swimming 9/28: The WHS swimmers and divers kicked off the season with the FISD Sprint Invitational this past weekend. Competing against 25 teams, the Wolverines had some impressive results at the end of the day. The girls finished 5th overall. Highlights were provided by Alex Huff finishing 1st in both the 25 Free and the 50 Back, setting a new meet record in the 50 back. and the girls 100 free relay, made up of Mercedes Sanchez, Rishawna Crane, Jennifer Bressler, and Alex Huff, finished 2nd. The boys team had an amazing first place finish, bringing home a first place trophy for the first time in the program's history. Highlights were provided by the boys medley relay of Devin Compan, Ian Sim, Jesse Kubanet, and Tanner Sanders, who out-touched Frisco High for a fantastic 1st place finish. Also, Devin Compan finished first in the 25 free, tying the meet record. I am extremely proud of the standard they have set for this year. We will be working hard to repeat that performance throughout the season. |
